The top 3 things to do when starting in a project as a change manager

When you are joining a project there are three priority things to do:

1) Don't assume that the project manager knows what a Change Manager actually does. Everyone knows that assuming anything makes an 'ass' out of 'me' and 'u', so be sure to ask the question of the project manager as to whether they have worked with a Change manager before. This will help you to understand their perspective and possibly past experiences - positive or negative when working with other Change Managers. One of the biggest negative gripes about Change Managers is that they don't 'do' anything. Unfair to say the least but it is also pointless being a Change Manager who decides to teach Change theory to a project manager who doesn't want to listen. You earn trust and respect by doing, delivering, listening and learning. So if that is the case it you will need to press the 'reset' button with the project manager, and agree on roles and responsibilities.

2) Meet with the Project sponsor to understand their expectations: The project sponsor will have their objectives for the project, and their own expectations for the change function. One of the first meetings to set up (apart from with the project manager) is with the project sponsor. The purpose of that meeting would be to listen to what the project sponsor's requirements are. It is also to gauge the level of understanding the sponsor may have about change management.

3) Approach everything with a team-based, growth mind set:  This is one of the most important tips. When a 'them' and 'us' mentality is evident, unnecessary tension is created. Being a team player takes the form of ensuring stakeholders expectations are met and the project is well run so as to build up momentum and a positive reputation. It may mean supporting the project manager in communicating effectively risks and issues in the Governance forum, so that everyone is well informed. Typically communication is the strength of a Change Manager. If the project manager is open to it of course. So all messaging can be consistent, it sometimes means supporting all project areas in communicating effectively.

These are just three tips to if you are new to a project team. Nothing beats approaching all areas with a growth mind set.
