Sometimes it is about getting back to basics

Do you ever have those days? When there are a number of issues, too many chefs in the kitchen or the complexities of the project come to the fore and everyone has an opinion but no solutions are put on the table? That is when it is good to go back to structure, discipline and get back to basics.

Leadership is key

Overwhelm is something that is bound to crop up in large, complex projects. Panic can set in, whether it be from your stakeholders, sponsors or impacted groups. It takes a strong leader at those times to settle everything down. It is important to ask for help so you can then focus on getting back to basics.

What do I mean by back to basics?

1) Go back to 'process' to resolve issues:- Everything is a process. Decision making triages, change management, project management, issue resolution - all processes. Use these processes to triage, escalate and resolve issues. If you are the project or change manager, it isn't your role to decide it is your role to facilitate the process in a manner that supports the business. So let the process do the work for you.

2) Checkpoint your practices to the relevant discipline:- There are many times throughout a project or change I go back to the pure discipline to assess gaps. If you are lucky you have a PMO who can assess how well the project is structured or how well the change strategy is going in a skilled and objective fashion. It is worthwhile to assess if the discipline is being followed to make sure the bones of the project or program are strong, regardless of the stage you are in.

 3) Simple is always best:- if people are confused or not clear on what is happening and when, time to bring simplicity to the table. Simple messages, clear communication and revisiting benefits and the 'why'. This can often settle down angst amongst stakeholders when the 'how' can be a little unsettling.

4) Respond don't react:- Nothing is ever perfect. Sometimes things are missed or at the last minute fast decisions need to be made. At these times it is important that your emotions don't get the better of you and that someone who manages their stress well is in charge. There is nothing worse than people having an emotive reaction to something rather than a measured response, jeopardising the whole program or change because of an overreaction. Make sure you are in a centred place if you are the one in charge and something crops up at the last minute. In fact prepare for it, and if it happens at least you were expecting to deal with something. If nothing happens even better! This is where an understanding of neuroscience and leadership helps to get the best outcomes.

If you take some of these actions you will find a sense of control again, and improve your outcomes for your team and your organisation. There's nothing better than getting back to basics!
